4. Blue

Memories of that fateful day could never be erased from my memories as it was being deeply engraved into my mind. Every moment of that incident would flash back in my mind every now and then as though it was there to remind me of my mistakes that caused such harm. I tried every method I could think of to clear the unwanted memory of mine, I even lied to myself, telling myself it was just an accident that no one had called for, it was not my fault, but it to no avail. That dreadful memory would haunt me in any form, nightmares or flashbacks, I was scarred for life due to my recklessness.

The clear blue sea situated at East Coast Park was a must to visit whenever me and my companions had the chance to, be it school holidays or weekends. The blue sky above the sea with different shades of blue seem to bring us happiness every time we meet. We could never understand why would there be a saying that “Blue represents sadness” as it seem to bring us joy, laughter and definitely release from our stress from school. Blue was indeed my favorite color. It calms me of any worries. Removes my “Blues” when I feel down.

Like any other visits to East Coast Park, my companions and I would take a quick sprint down the coast, sinking our feet up to our ankle into the cool blue sea water. What a wonderful feeling that was, caring nothing more then releasing every bit of our stress. Immediately after the quick sprint, we screamed our hearts out and dive into the sea splashing and swimming without any worries. We float on the sea with our faces staring at the enormous blue sky, wondering how huge it was while the clouds drift by. That dreadful day however, my mischief got the better of me and I leapt towards Ernest, my best friend, and pinned him down beneath the water. My other companions started laughing in excitement. Ernest fought back, getting up and pushing me down instead. Before we knew it, all of us were shoving each other into the water. In excitement, safety precautions slipped my mind and I grabbed Ernest’s head and shoved it into the water. He struggled, unleashing all his might but I did not give up, instead, I used all my might to go against him. Seconds passed he waved his arms frantically in the air, but I continue to ensure his head being submerged in the water treating it as a game. Soon, he stopped. He was neither struggling to get back at me nor waving his arms frantically. He floated on the surface of the water but I took no notice. Instead, I burst into laughing misunderstanding the situation. “I won! I won! Ernest, you weakling!”. I cheered on thinking he was playing dead and trying to get back at me but there was no responds. Everyone went silent as they watch Ernest keep afloat on the surface of the water, face down, without any sign of movement. It was then that I realize the situation. I yelled out loud to Ernest but to no avail, he could not reply, he has left our sides, he was killed by the blue sea which brought joy to us, he was killed by me.

The blue sea never appeared calmed me anymore, instead it brought horror to me. The clear blue sky filled with clouds of all shapes did not cheer me up like it did before, now, all that it did was bring back the horrifying nightmares of how I killed my friend. Indeed, the color blue represents my sorrow now.
